About Milton Rooms

If you are looking for the best in music, theatre or community events in Malton look no further than The Milton Rooms.

Heart of the Community

When it was first built in the early 1800s, it included a Subscription Rooms, the Masonic Lodge and a Theatre, which was later converted into a Mechanics Hall and Reading Room in 1839 and then demolished in 1930.

Today

The current Milton Rooms complex was built in 1931 on the former site of the original theatre and its main space seats almost 300 theatre style. It features the largest sprung wooden dance floor in North Yorkshire. The Assembly Rooms is widely used for community events and meetings. In addition, the Studio Bar has been converted into a comfortable and friendly place for a drink before or after a show.

The Future

Redevelopment of the Milton Rooms is ongoing and in August 2021, Ryedale District Council agreed an investment of around £500,000 to upgrade the building’s ageing infrastructure including toilet facilities, as well as adding state of the art light and sounds systems. Our aim is to break-even, as a not-for-profit organisation, with all money we make from tickets being re-invested into the venue and into creating a great theatre, arts and community programme for Malton. We are run by a an active team of volunteers- Charity no 1162515

Since it was built in the 1800s, The Milton Rooms has been an active hub for arts and community events and activity in Ryedale. In one unique location we can offer three very different styles of venue.

Main Hall

The main hall is used regularly for major touring theatre companies, music events and significant community events, including an annual beer festival. It is a lovely space, with high ceilings and echoing the elegance of a bygone age, and we boast the largest sprung wooden dance floor in the North of England. Arranged in theatre style we can seat 300 people, or 250 with standing and a dance floor. If you are looking for tables, we can easily accommodate 150 people cabaret-style.

Assembly Room

A light and elegant space with high ceilings, restored wooden floor and Georgian period windows and mouldings, it is ideal for weddings, but has been used in the past for fashion sales and large scale meetings. The Assembly Rooms can accommodate up to 80 people.

Studio Bar

Our Studio Bar can be hired independently of the main hall and provides a cosy atmosphere, ideal for music or spoken word events. It has state-of-the-art sound and lighting, installed recently, and a fully stocked bar. The Studio Bar can accommodate up to 30 people.
