Sherburn-in-Elmet has a long-standing connection with making and crafting. The 1699 Fairey Swordfish naval torpedo aircraft was built here. During the Second World War, the town’s Airfield was used as a Royal Air Force station and from 1940, Blackburn Aircraft used a Ministry of Aircraft Production factory here to build the Swordfish. Today, the airfield is a popular place for aviators, enthusiasts and those looking for a fun family day out.
The town is served by the railway station with services to York railway station, Hull Paragon Interchange and Sheffield railway station, with a second station (South Milford railway station) in nearby South Milford providing services to Leeds and Kingston upon Hull. Arriva Yorkshire buses take you to Leeds, Tadcaster and Selby.
